Decolonize Me

Decolonization is more than a term—it’s a movement. It represents the cultural, psychological, and economic liberation of Indigenous communities. For us, reclaiming our mana is the first step toward empowerment.

Although TJD focuses on celebrating the beauty and strength of the Pacific, we recognize the importance of addressing the painful truths that have shaped our histories. As Indigenous peoples, we share a collective pain—a pain born from the devastation of colonialism. Our islands, lands, and people have all endured its impact, and its legacy continues to affect us today. Our story is one of both beauty and resilience, but it is incomplete without acknowledging the struggles that came before. The unbearable pain and unfathomable injustices that our ancestors faced must be recognized so that we can begin to heal. Acknowledging these truths allows us to reconnect with our essence—our traditions, customs, spirit, and connection to our lands. This is how we take back our power.

Reclaiming our power doesn’t mean control; it means restoration. It means embracing our brilliance, our mana, and our deep-rooted connections to our ancestors and the land.

Our mana is waiting for us!

This design embodies this message. Justice Tuani, the owner of TJD, reimagined an existing symbol through ‘art reinterpretation’ to inspire cultural reclamation and empowerment. Patterns from Samoa, Rarotonga, and Tahiti are intricately woven together to represent the vast diversity of Pacific peoples. Each bold and structured motif symbolizes strength and resilience, while their alignment reflects unity and harmony across Indigenous communities. The vibrant colours represent just a few of the many lands impacted by colonization, while the distortion of the original symbol visually conveys the work already underway. From Indigenous leaders in government to content creators educating the world about our stories, we all play a role in reclaiming our essence.

Our mana is waiting for us!
